Random String

A random string is a series of characters that do not have a predictable sequence; especially when the list of random strings is generated. These are often used as identifiers in computer systems. Often random strings are encoded onto NFC tags and barcodes as a replacement for the NFC chip’s UID.

Random strings have the following attributes that should be considered:

  • Variable or fixed length
  • Numbers (1, 2, 3…), alphabetic characters (A, b, C…) and special characters (%, &, …)
  • Upper and lower case
  • Use of “confusing” characters; I and 1, 0 and O

While whitespace characters like space ‘ ‘ and new line ‘\n’ could be used; it’s generally bad practice.
